Korea severance pay calculator, after tax
The Ministry of Employment and Labor calculator gives you severance pay before tax. This one also takes off retirement income tax and local income tax, so you see what you keep.
Example: 10 years of service and ₩50,000,000 of severance pay. Income tax ₩680,000, local tax ₩68,000, you keep ₩49,252,000.
Dates
If you already took an interim severance payment (중간정산), enter the day after it. Service restarts from there (Article 8(2)).
The leaving date is the day after this. Same as the Ministry calculator.
Pay for the last 3 months
Before tax. Base pay plus allowances, from your payslips.
3/12 of this is added to the 3-month pay (Ministry calculator method).
Pay you got for leave you did not take. 3/12 of it is added too.
If your average wage is lower than this, this is used instead (Labor Standards Act, Article 2(2)).
Periods left out of the average wage (only if you had one)
If one of these falls inside the 3-month period, both its days and the pay you got for it come out (Enforcement Decree of the Labor Standards Act, Article 2(1)). Your days of service for severance stay the same. Article 2 only covers the average wage period.
- The first 3 months of a probation period
- Time off because the employer shut work down
- Maternity leave, and leave after a miscarriage or stillbirth
- Time off to recover from a work injury or illness
- Parental leave
- A strike or other industrial action
- Military, reserve or civil defense duty (not if you were paid for it)
- Time off approved by the employer for a non-work injury, illness or similar reason
Money paid because you are leaving, such as early retirement pay, is retirement income too. It is added before the tax.
Severance before tax
Enter your start date and last working day.
Estimate only. Check the real figures on the retirement income withholding receipt your employer gives you. This is not tax or labor advice.
Nothing you entered was sent to a server. It stays in this browser only.
Know this before you leave
- You get severance pay if you worked at least 1 year and at least 15 hours a week (Retirement Benefit Act, Article 4).
- It is at least 30 days of average wage per year. Average wage comes from your last 3 months of pay.
- Your employer must pay within 14 days of leaving, unless you both agree to a later date (Article 9).
- If you leave before age 55, the money usually goes into an IRP account, with no tax taken at that point.
What this does not do
It does not replace your withholding receipt. Results are estimates. Check the retirement income withholding receipt (퇴직소득 원천징수영수증) your employer gives you.
It is not tax or labor advice. It does not say which bank or product to use.
It does not work out executive severance or defined contribution (DC) pension balances. The tax part is the same, so use the tax calculator.
How the numbers workLeaving Korea after your job?
If you worked on a work visa and leave Korea after quitting, your severance does not have to go into an IRP (Enforcement Decree, Article 3-2(1)4). Non-residents are taxed differently, and this calculator uses resident rules.

StatutesWhat this calculation leaves out
Things we could not confirm from the source, or that this calculator does not work out.
- The cap on executive retirement income (Income Tax Act, Article 22(3)) is not applied. The excess is taxed as wages.
- With a defined contribution (DC) plan you get the account balance, so the before-tax amount differs. The tax is worked out the same way.
- The part-time check does not take out left-out periods. If you had one, use the severance calculator page and its left-out period fields.
- The withholding receipt may differ by a few won because of how the last digits are rounded.
- If your company rules pay more than the law, those rules apply. This shows the legal minimum.
- Non-resident taxation of retirement income is not covered. Resident rules only.
